The San Francisco 49ers leaned heavily on Christian McCaffrey once again — and it paid off. In a tough 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers, McCaffrey was the heart of the 49ers’ offense as quarterback Brock Purdy battled through one of his worst first halves of the season. With the win, San Francisco moved to 8-4 and stayed on track for a strong playoff push.
McCaffrey Shoulders the Load Again
It’s clear the 49ers have no interest in load-managing Christian McCaffrey. Head coach Kyle Shanahan continues to ride his star running back like it’s a video game with injuries turned off. McCaffrey handled 24 carries for 89 rushing yards and added seven receptions for another 53 yards. That’s 31 touches in one game — and he’s been doing it all season.
On the first drive alone, McCaffrey touched the ball nine times and helped set up a touchdown to Jauan Jennings. It’s become routine for the 29-year-old, who already had 267 touches before this game. While most running backs his age see a drop in usage, McCaffrey’s role is only growing.
Purdy’s First-Half Nightmare
Brock Purdy had a rough start to the game, throwing three interceptions before halftime — two of them picked by Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn. One of those picks came in the red zone, wasting a chance for the 49ers to at least get a field goal.
Despite the mistakes, head coach Kyle Shanahan defended his quarterback, saying Purdy’s decisions weren’t necessarily bad — just late or slightly off-target. Luckily for San Francisco, the Panthers couldn’t fully capitalise on those turnovers.
Panthers Fail to Convert Key Chances
Carolina had multiple opportunities to swing the game their way. After a Purdy interception brought them inside the 49ers’ 20-yard line, rookie quarterback Bryce Young threw a pick right back. The Panthers moved the ball well at times, but they couldn’t find the end zone when it mattered.
San Francisco’s defense — missing big names like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner — still managed to hold Carolina to just three points in the first half.
Second Half: All About McCaffrey
With Purdy struggling, the 49ers went back to basics: feed McCaffrey. The veteran running back scored a key third-quarter touchdown to extend the lead to 17-3. Even when Carolina responded with a touchdown of their own (a pass from Young to Tetairoa McMillan), they couldn’t keep up.
A late interception thrown by Young, after what looked like a missed holding call on McMillan, sealed the game for San Francisco.
McCaffrey Keeps Delivering — But For How Long?
Since joining the 49ers, Christian McCaffrey has been everything the team could hope for and more. He’s taken over as the focal point of the offense, especially with several key players out injured.
He’s already on pace for over 400 touches this season — a number that could wear down even the toughest backs. But for now, McCaffrey is carrying the 49ers into serious playoff contention. Whether he can keep it up through January remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: as long as McCaffrey’s healthy, the 49ers are a threat to any team.
