West Virginia state trooper shot and killed, armed suspect at large
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice said that a state trooper was shot and killed in Mingo County on Friday.
He also said that many law enforcement agencies are looking for the suspect, who is still at large, in the Beech Creek area.
Justice said that Sgt. Cory Maynard was killed in a fight with shooting near Matewan.
"The brave men and women of law enforcement, as well as all first responders,
who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, are an inspiration to us all," Justice said in a statement.
To remember the following trooper, the governor's office has told all U.S. and West Virginia flags to be flown at half-staff starting right away.
Timothy Kennedy, who is 29 years old, is wanted in connection with the killing.
Police say he is armed and dangerous
Troopers said that when they went to the scene of a shooting call near Matewan, they were met with gunshots.
The search for Kennedy put off graduation at Mingo Central High School, and emergency workers told people to stay inside until Kennedy was found.
