Retrial finds actor Danny Masterson guilty on 2 of 3 rape charges.
In a Los Angeles case involving Scientology, a jury convicted "That '70s Show" actor Danny Masterson guilty of two of three rape charges on Wednesday.
The seven-woman, five-man jury deliberated for seven days over two weeks before reaching a decision. The third count, alleging Masterson raped a longtime lover, was unresolved. 8-4 convicted.
Masterson left the courtroom handcuffed. The 47-year-old actor may serve 30 years.
As he was brought away, his wife, actress and model Bijou Phillips, cried. Family and friends were stoic.
"I am experiencing a complex array of emotions – relief, exhaustion, strength, sadness – knowing that my abuser, Danny Masterson, will face accountability for his criminal behavior," said one of the women Masterson was convicted of raping at his house in 2003.
After a December mistrial, prosecutors charged Masterson with violently raping three women, including a longtime lover, at his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003.
They told jurors he spiked women's drinks to rape them. They alleged he leveraged his status in the church—where all three women were members—to dodge punishment for decades.
Masterson and his counsel did not testify. The defense maintained that the activities were consensual and tried to undermine the women's testimony by pointing out changes and contradictions that revealed cooperation.
