The Pittsburgh Steelers’ new tight end, Darnell Washington, was compared to a club legend.
The 6-foot-7, 265-pound Washington recalls former Steelers quarterback Jim Miller of great tight end Eric Green.
Miller stated he could sprint like Eric Green. As a Steeler, Eric has 65 catches.
Green, a 1990 NFL Draft first-round choice, played five seasons for the Steelers and established several position records. Green caught 63 catches for 942 yards and five touchdowns in 1993, his most outstanding season.
Washington is even bigger than 6-foot-5, 280-pound Green, but like Green, he has a unique mix of size and speed for any position.
On Thursday’s Movin’ the Chains with Miller and Pat Kirwan on Sirius XM Radio, Steelers general manager Omar Khan agreed.
“6-foot-7 and change and can move,” Khan remarked. “It’s impressive. It’s rare. He’s fun. He’ll assist us pass and run. He played with first-round choice Broderick Jones, which is a bonus. They communicate well in-game. That’ll benefit us.”
Green was a red zone threat in his first season, playing behind Mike Mularkey. 1990 rookie Green scored seven touchdowns on 34 catches.
He started in 1991, save for a 1992 injury, and departed via free agency in 1995. After one season with the Miami Dolphins, three with the Baltimore Ravens, and one with the New York Jets, Green retired in 1999. He ended with 362 receptions, 4,390 yards, and 36 touchdowns.
